Polka Dot Pool Party

7 08 2014

My younger daughter was so excited to turn five.  She really wanted a pool party this year (as many of her preschool friends had been having them, and she had fun at them, so she wanted one of her own).  By all rights, this should have been an easy party.  Kids come, have fun in the pool, have some pizza and cake and easy clean up.  Well, I knew I wouldn’t be happy with it being that easy.  If we were having a pool party, it would still be themed, fun and look good!

My daughter helped pick out the decorations.  I was fully expecting them to be pink, but she surprised me by picking out the blue.  She said that blue would be like water and fit the theme better.  I had to laugh, at five the girl has style!  For food, there was pizza, raw veggies and fruit, and yogurt tubes in a beach bucket with a shovel.

The kids played a game of “Guess How Many”.  The boy or girl who guessed closest won a large bottle of miracle bubbles.

I made a mix of chocolate and vanilla cupcakes and decorated them with a beach theme:  teddy grahams laying on a fruit leather beach blanket under an umbrella … teddy graham in a gummy tube floating in the water … sharks in a blue icing ocean … plain white icing with some sparkly disco dust.  Easily, the most popular were the blue gummy sharks in the blue water.

I have to admit, the loot bags for this party were awesome.  I found Dr. Seuss “One Fish, Two Fish” reusable bags at Target on clearance for ten cents each!  They were smaller (about the size of a lunch bag).  I filled them with bubble (that I found on sale months before for $0.24), Crayola sparkly side walk chalk (again, on sale months earlier for $0.44), really cute inflatable animal rings to swim with (on sale at the end of the previous summer for $1), and some lifesaver gummies.  Very good loot bag for under $2 per child.  It pays to buy ahead if you have the storage space ~ and don’t forget that you have purchased the stuff!

She loved her party, and it was a nice change for me.
